Good Morning! It has been raining here in upstate for the last few days...it feels warm and balmy and the plants in our raised beds are glad for the rain. In the shop, the A-style mandolin is under way... I am making this instrument for a favorite mandolin player of mine.
I decided to make a new drawing of the silhouette of the body shape.
It seems a simple enough shape, but still, I want to make sure it is just right. Next, I prepare the Adirondack spruce for joining together.
I got this Adirondack spruce hand split into wedges perfect for instrument making. My friend Zack Thomas, who is a timber framer, dropped off a pickup truck load one day. Thanks Zack! Much of that wood will be put to good use in these upcoming mandolins I will be making.
My favorite part of making is bringing a piece of wood in its rough form into a beautiful, handcrafted instrument.
Time to join the wood....
The first exciting step!
Until next time,
