Joe Val Bluegrass Festival

Hello all!  We had a nice time at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival in Framingham, Mass.  In the midst of a room swimming with Eastman Instruments, I was able to set up a table to show my new mandolins that I had just finished.  It can be a bit discouraging to see so many of the mass produced instruments with lower price tags being sold so frequently these days, but I do appreciate the player that comes to my table/booth and sees the quality of workmanship, the sound and the artistry that goes into the handcrafted Macica Instrument.  Here are a few photos of the new mandolins…

Ian’s new Macica Mandolin:

I recently put the finishing touches on a Macica Mandolin that is actually the first mandolin that I ever made.  I never fully finished it out and have kept it in storage until now.  I asked my son, Ian if he would like to have this instrument if I took the time to finish it out.  He gave me his input on how he would like to  see it finished out, and he now has his very own Macica instrument…

The shop’s new look:

Here is a photo of the main workshop area above….This winter we have worked on making a second workshop space with two new benches and some more shelving for hanging instruments.  This new space makes room for my sons to work on various projects, some independent study class space for instrument building, and more bench space for repairs as well…

Maplewood Center for Common Craft: Guitar Building Class

We recently finished the Guitar Building Class at Maplewood Center for Common Craft...  It is so rewarding to come to the last class when we finish putting on the hardware, string up the instruments and listen to them play.  I so enjoy seeing the smiles on the students faces as they strum their own handcrafted guitar for the first time!  Great job guys!  Here are some photos from the class….

New Instrument Building Class/Mandolins/Fresh Grass 2017

IMG_2614 (Custom)

Hello all! I had a great time at Fresh Grass 2017 and enjoyed visiting with all that came by our booth. One of the main reasons for being there this time around was to deliver a mandolin commission to a customer of mine that was going to be at the festival.  I love working on commissions, because it is a great experience to work together with another player and to come up with a design that is special for that individuals needs and wants in an instrument….

Cello, Violin or Viola Building Class

Let’s build a Cello, Violin or Viola!

This is a hands-on course for making a cello, violin or viola.  You will complete one of these instruments from start to finish.  This will not be a “kit made” instrument.  The process of this class will be mostly done using hand tools.  This course will not only give you a better understanding of what goes into making a stringed instrument, but you will leave this course with a beautiful hand-crafted cello, violin or viola that you have made. The course is taught by Martin Macica, Maker of Fine Stringed Instruments. Martin apprenticed in New York City with Mosa Havivi and has been a master of stringed instruments for 35 years now. Feel free to check out the creative process of instrument making on his website at

Two-week Guitar Building Intensive Class with my Nephew….

IMG_2107 (Custom)

My nephew, Miciah had been wanting to build his own guitar, but seeing how he lives 3 1/2 hours away, he was unable to take one of the Guitar Building classes that I teach in our local area.  We decided to have him come stay with us for two weeks and have a intensive guitar building class (like an independent study) with him during that time.  At the end of our time together, he had built himself a beautiful instrument with a great soundA job well done Miciah!  Here are some photos of the process….
